What Is Lymphatic Drainage Therapy?

Lymphatic drainage therapy is a gentle, specialized hands-on technique designed to stimulate and support your body’s lymphatic system. Often overlooked yet essential to your health, the lymphatic system serves as your body’s natural filtration and waste removal mechanism.

Unlike deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage uses rhythmic, light-pressure movements that follow the natural pathways of lymphatic vessels. These precise, wave-like strokes encourage the movement of lymph fluid throughout your body.

Key functions of the lymphatic system:

  • Removes cellular waste and toxins from tissues
  • Transports immune cells to fight infection
  • Maintains fluid balance throughout the body

At At Ease Physio in South Surrey, our therapists are trained in manual lymphatic drainage techniques that integrate seamlessly with your broader physiotherapy treatment plan. We serve patients across Langley, Delta, and Morgan Crossing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs running throughout your body parallel to your circulatory system. Unlike blood, which is pumped by your heart, lymph fluid relies on muscle movement and manual stimulation to circulate. When the system becomes sluggish, you may experience swelling, frequent illness, and fatigue.
For post-surgical recovery, 3 to 6 sessions in the weeks following surgery often provides excellent results. For chronic conditions like lymphedema, ongoing maintenance may be recommended — typically weekly or bi-weekly initially, transitioning to monthly as your condition stabilizes. For general wellness, monthly sessions effectively support immune function.
During treatment, you'll experience very light, rhythmic touch that many clients describe as deeply relaxing. Afterward, you may feel relaxed and slightly tired, similar to the sensation after a restful nap. Increased urination in the 24 to 48 hours following treatment is normal and indicates your body is eliminating mobilized fluid.
While safe for most people, certain conditions require caution: active infections, untreated cancer, acute deep vein thrombosis, and severe heart conditions. Your therapist will review your health history during your initial assessment to ensure treatment is appropriate for you.
When provided by a registered physiotherapist, lymphatic drainage therapy is typically covered under extended health benefits that include physiotherapy. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend checking with your provider. Our clinic provides receipts for insurance submission.
